Inside by The Numen Collaboration

Numen/ For Use is a Vienna-based design collective that is known to create unconventional structures in interior spaces. The structures often explore both the physical and psychological attributes of the space. Their exhibition "Inside" was a series of futuristic sculptures that were made entirely out of tape and cellophane.

The installation was site specific and was made up of huge webs of tape that had a sculptural architecture form. The audience was then able to enter the space and in turn become part of the art. The form of the sculpture was made up to have a similar organic structure that can be found in nature. The interior of the structure was supple and elastic where as the form itself remained statically perfect.

"The installation was envisaged as a Site Specific, parasitical structure invading an arbitrary location."

Structures in Nature

Even in nature animals and plants are constantly transforming spaces be it a bird's nest, fungus or a spider's web. Both spaces are intricate and delicate and give a space new meaning which is a home- a place to hunt, eat, live etc. I particularly love the way in which a spider's web can completely take over a space in nature and the way it's beauty is enhanced by other elements such as light and dew etc. Also I'm fascinated in the way it can be a something beautiful to be admired whilst simultaneously being something to be trapped and tangled in.

It's interesting to see the ways in which nature can even effect the structure of man made buildings. For example the image above is of a stadium in Beijing which was inspired by the intricate and beautiful structure of a bird's nest.

Kings Of Summer

Jordan Vogt-Roberts 2013 film Kings of Summer tells the story of three boys who run away from home to live in home they built themselves in the woods. I'm inspired by the sequence in the film were they build their glorified tree house using scraps they scavenge across the town and woods. The result is a beautiful patch work quilt of a home that brings to life every childhood dream. I think this is a powerful concept which is our ability to transform a space into childhood fantasies.

Light

I'm also interested in the way light can completely transform the space in a room. For example, as seen in the image above the use of coloured light/glass can add detail and fantasy to room. Also the use of shadow and brightness can change both the atmosphere and appearance of a room.
